Brightspeed’s DSL service isn’t knock-your-socks-off fast, but it’s affordable and delivers solid speeds for customers living in small towns and rural areas with limited Wi-Fi.
Brightspeed plans don’t have contracts or data caps, and the prices are competitive with other DSL providers. And DSL is definitely faster and cheaper than satellite internet. Brightspeed is a new internet provider offering DSL service in 20 states across the South and Midwest, along with Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Brightspeed also has a small fiber footprint, but availability is very limited.
The company launched in October 2022 as part of a $7.5 billion deal for parent company Apollo Global Management to acquire the DSL and phone customers of Lumen Technologies, CenturyLink’s parent company. Although it primarily has DSL service, Brightspeed plans to expand its fiber network across most of its service footprint over the next four years.
Brightspeed faces stiff competition against established cable providers like Xfinity and Spectrum. Both of these larger internet providers get better ratings in our annual customer satisfaction survey. They deliver faster speeds and have lower prices on some plans too.
AT&T meanwhile has both fiber and DSL internet, whereas Brightspeed mainly has DSL. Fiber is faster, more reliable, and much more cost effective considering that you can get a fiber plan that’s many times faster than a DSL plan for basically the same price. However, Brightspeed’s DSL is slightly cheaper than AT&T’s DSL and gets you the same speeds. So that’s a bright spot.
