Spectrum provides cable internet in 45 states. Most of its coverage lies within the Eastern and Central time zones and along the West Coast. Spectrum has some fiber-to-the-premises internet too, but only in new neighborhoods and rural areas, so availability is limited. You won’t know which internet type you can get until you speak with a Spectrum representative.
Enter your zip code to see if Spectrum is available in your area.
According to data from our speed tests taken between January 9, 2022, to January 9, 2023, Spectrum has one of the lowest download averages of all the national internet providers. Spectrum falls behind cable internet rivals Xfinity (157.13Mbps), Cox (154.73Mbps), and Optimum (143.31Mbps).
Keep in mind that, generally, people run speed tests because they notice slowdowns with their connections. The averages you see here could reflect issues with WiFi, the modem, or something else outside the home. Some customers may still have 100Mbps and 200Mbps max speeds due to the local infrastructure.
Average download speed: 139.34Mbps
Average upload speed: 68.11Mbps
Total speed tests: 630,702

Spectrum doesn’t bundle internet with TV for one low monthly price. Instead, you can pair one of its three internet plans with its TV Select, TV Silver, or TV Gold services. Each internet plan and TV service has discounted pricing for the first 12 months.
However, Spectrum does bundle internet with Spectrum Mobile. All three internet plans include one Spectrum Mobile line and Spectrum Advanced WiFi for one low price during the first 12 months.
Choose Spectrum Internet if you don’t have access to fiber and want faster speeds than DSL. Spectrum streamlines your choices and throws in a rent-free modem to boot. The Internet Gig plan even has the fastest upload speed for cable internet, reaching up to 500Mbps in limited areas.
Pros
Cons
Spectrum’s biggest competitors are AT&T, Verizon, and Frontier, which all provide both fiber and DSL internet in areas overlapping Spectrum’s cable internet service areas.
Spectrum is more expensive than the competition, even with its initial discounted pricing. For example, when we compare the Gigabit plans, AT&T and Frontier are cheaper than Spectrum, costing $55.00 and $69.99 per month, respectively. Verizon’s Gigabit plan costs $89.99 per month, just like Spectrum.
But once Spectrum’s promotional period ends, you end up paying $114.99 per month by the third year, while AT&T, Verizon, and Frontier pricing don’t change.

Spectrum offers mostly cable internet and some fiber-to-the-premises internet.
You can self-install Spectrum Internet for $24.99, which includes service activation. Professional installation is also available at $59.99 for customers who don’t have fiber or cable already installed in their homes. WiFi Pod install is an additional $49.99 fee.
Spectrum supplies a modem or gateway for free. WiFi costs $5.00 per month for Spectrum Internet and Spectrum Internet Ultra customers. Spectrum also charges $3.00 for each Spectrum WiFi Pod you use.
Spectrum uses the “wireless speeds may vary” disclaimer because WiFi fluctuates. You can see 600Mbps in one second and 550Mbps in another in just one sitting. WiFi uses radio waves, after all, so interference plays a big part in your wireless speed. A neighbor’s WiFi, nearby radar, the building’s structure, other wireless devices, the time of day, an active microwave, and software issues are just a handful of factors that can affect your WiFi speed.
You can take steps to alleviate some of the interference, but you’ll never see the more consistent speeds of a wired connection when using WiFi.
Spectrum uses the “up to” disclaimer because speeds are never consistent. Speeds fluctuate due to internet congestion, hardware issues in the neighborhood, and other factors, so you’ll never see the maximum speed all the time.
Plus, some regions have different maximum speeds due to the local infrastructure. For example, the Internet Gig plan supports upload speeds of up to 500Mbps in some areas but only 35Mbps in others. Spectrum continues to update its local infrastructures across the US, but speeds may be slower in rural areas than speeds experienced in a nearby town.
Charter Communications acquired Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks in 2016. Charter Communications uses the Spectrum brand for its internet, phone, and TV services.
Spectrum Internet consists of cable networks previously used by Charter Cable, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks. Spectrum Mobile utilizes Charter’s cable internet infrastructure and Verizon’s 4G and 5G networks.
Customers on legacy plans from Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks must manually switch to a Spectrum Internet plan to discontinue the monthly gateway or modem lease.
